The Alaskan salmon troll season is short, usually only lasting July through September and is a derby style fishery, meaning fishermen put in as many hours during the open dates as possible because no one is allotted a guaranteed amount of fish. The number of fish and pounds caught during that period is very volatile. This means supplies are limited and once sold out, the wait for next years fishing season begins!
FAS stands for Frozen At Sea.
FAS Salmon is the highest quality fish currently offered on the market. All salmon are immediately pressure bled, cleaned and frozen in subzero temperatures within minutes of being pulled from the water.
The temperatures at which our fish are flash frozen and held ensures sashimi grade quality free of bacteria, parasites or any harmful pathogens.
We get a lot of questions regarding our method of fishing, one of the most common questions we are asked is how our fish are actually caught. Trolling is a netless fishery, instead- all fish are caught hook and line, one fish at a time. This method ensures close attention is paid to the processing of each fish, achieving the highest level of quality that can be offered. No net marks, abrasions or bruising and minimal scale loss.
Just quality.
Please include your desired species and pounds you are interested in, we will get back to you as soon as we can with availability and ordering details!
Lovers of the outdoors, especially fishing, Taylor and Nicole decided they wanted to relocate from their home in Wasilla to Nicole’s hometown of Craig, on Prince Of Wales where she was raised participating in commercial fisheries. The goal was to pursue their dream of owning their own fishing vessel and to live the fishing lifestyle together.
In 2013 that dream came true when they made the leap and purchased their vessel, Fishnpohl.
What an adventure life has been since!
The F/V Fishnpohl is a 46’ Little Hoquiam hull, built in 1976 by Howard Moe in Hoquiam, Washington. Fishnpohl has participated in a wide variety of fisheries ranging from Trolling to Longlining, even serving as a tender for commercial crabbing and diving fisheries.
Taylor and Nicole started their troll career with Fishnpohl storing their fish packed in chip ice, which is a very common way to store salmon until sale at fish buying stations in local towns. The downside however, to hand packing fish with chip ice is the short amount of time the fish can be stored before requiring offload and sale to the end customer, Thus leading to a product that has a very demanding time limit and lack of ability to stay ‘fresh’.
A common ice trip for trollers only lasts about 4 days, unloading product on the 5th day to a buyer for further processing before sale to the end user. This also means quality varies heavily between the fish buying station and the point of final sale. Meaning- after the fish are off of the boat, the fishermen are no longer in control of the quality of their product.
Solution? Enter new venture - on vessel freezer system!
In the spring of 2018 we had a contact plate freezer system installed. Our contact plates reach a temperature of -70°F and our fish storage hatch maintains an average temperature of -40°F. In the 2018 fishing season we had an average salmon core temperature of -33°F! Which far exceeds the minimum temperature requirements for Sashimi grade salmon!
Freezing at sea creates a very stable environment for fish storage, transportation and handling, all the way to the end user.
We strive to deliver nothing but the best.
